SFI Fuel Injection

The SFi fuel injection module has been designed as a universal application. The advantages of this design are a much lower cost and immediate availability when new models arrive.

Yamaha TDM900 Fuel Injection

Monday, 19 March 2007 11:17 AM

I have a 2006 TDM 900 with staintune pipes. It is the second one I have had, the first was a 2002 model. I had hoped that the stuttering between 2500 and 3000 RPM would have been fixed but not so. It becomes a real pain when commuting in Sydney traffic. Will your SFI fix the hesitancy between these revs? Do you have tesimonies of satisfied TDM customers? Can you direct me to a couple? I do not want to buy one, have it fitted only to find that it does not solve my problems? Do I need to set the bike up on dyno machine to adjust it correctly? Is there a return policy if it does not work for me? DAB

Goodday David
Thanks for the enquiry,  you would certainly think our SFI's would fix the problem but I certainly could not guarantee it. There is no dyno required just a simple fit and run, all the previous dyno work and settings have been worked out already on a dyno. Please check the web site www.dobeckperformance.com for testimonies. Another option is to give Frank Pons a ring at BIKETEK 4620 9020 he is a tuning and suspension 'guru' who had a TDM 900 and may have some answers.

Subject: SEC: UNCLASSIFIED SFI for TDM 900

Paul, Thankyou for your response to my enquiry (attached below). The website did not contain any specific references to the TDM although speaking to Frank Pons gave me some confidence.

I have just spoken at length to Mark Condon at BIKEBIZ from where I bought the bike. I advised him of my dissatisfaction with the TDM 900 as it stands. He is keen to help me resolve the problem I mentioned earlier; apparently it is not to be an isolated event and ultimately it will make the model more marketable than it is now. He has agreed to assist me in installing the unit and, if necessary, adjusting it to overcome the problems identified below.
+ If he is unable to set the unit up satisfactorily to overcome problems, can he can establish a dialogue with the developer and programmer of the unit?
+ If between us we are unable to resolve the problem, can I return the unit to you and seek a refund?

Thanks for your time.

Subject: RE: UNCLASSIFIED SFI for TDM 900

Hi David
Sorry just a quick couple of questions to help me out, the stuttering you are talking about is only when you run the Staintune muffler or does it exist with the genuine muffler as well. The unit has to be purchased through a bikeshop (Bikebiz) and if their mechanics try to install it and find that it does not improve the situation then it can be returned.

Subject: SFI for TDM 900 - Happy [SEC=UNCLASSIFIED]

Paul, Please refresh yourself by reading the earlier correspondence between us on the attached emails. I have now had the SFI unit installed and ridden the 50klm round trip to work for about 10 days and had a quick dash to Nowra and back. So I've experienced the bike under all the usual conditions and now I am able to confidently report back.

You will be almost as pleased as me to know that the Staintune fuel injection control unit has solved the problem. I haven't actually seen the unit, the Bikbiz guys installed it under the tank or on the frame somewhere and I've not had time to investigate its actual location. I'm keen to see all those lights flashing at the different revs! But the irritating hesitancies and stuttering at low speed while negotiating in traffic have gone. This is most pleasing and I am completely satisfied. Indeed, soon I will be unable to recall the horrors of the bike before the unit was installed. I think I can also detect a little more response during roll-on at mid range and it seems to pull away stronger than before - but those are impressions only.

My diagnosis is that:

  • the bike EFI factory setup for the 2007 TDM is not the most appropriate to achieve best effect. (Maybe it meets the EURO III emission requirements but at the expense of the performance), and
  • your Staintune product is able to overcome this problem 'out of the box' without running the bike on a Dyno. Perhaps further adjusting the SFI unit from the factory setting might make to bike perform even better but I am very happy with the standard settings (at the moment).
As I have said throughout - the TDM 900 is really is a great bike. Now, with the STAINTUNE ICU, it is a great commuter as well as a competent tourer. Thanks for a product that has made this the case!.

I know Bikebiz have passed on to Yamaha an email which I sent to them that explained what the problem was and what we, Bikebiz, Staintune and I, provided as very satisfactory solution. Even if it was an extra expense for me to overcome a Yamaha assembly line/production/ tuning defect !

I am happy for you to use this as a testimonial or pass my details on to other prospective customers, if you wish.
